If you’re already certified to teach in another state or country, you may be able to skip certain exams or steps to get your Texas teaching certificate.

Short answer: No. 

Longer answer: To teach in Texas public schools, you’ll eventually need a teaching certificate. But if you have a bachelor’s degree or vocational work experience, you may qualify for alternative pathways that put you in the classroom faster!

• Do you have a bachelor’s degree? Alternative certification programs let you start teaching while you earn your teaching certificate. These programs typically take less time and cost less than standard certification programs.
• Are you a tradesperson? If you have vocational work experience, you may be able to get certified to teach a Career and Technical Education subject—and you may not need a degree! Career and Technical Education positions may be available in fields such as automotive repair, health sciences, hospitality and others. (1)
