In Texas, you can find registered teacher apprenticeships through school districts and organizations like educational service centers. In most apprenticeships, you’ll work in a school and take college classes outside of school hours.
It can be helpful if you have at least an associate degree before you begin—but you can start an apprenticeship even with no college credits!

Once you find an apprenticeship program in your area, you’ll follow the school district or organization’s application process.
In Texas, you’ll often start your apprenticeship working as a paraeducator (sometimes known as a paraprofessional, teacher’s aide or teaching assistant). This role lets you see how a classroom works, practice developing lessons and build your skills.
Once you have a job offer, your apprenticeship can help connect you with their partner teaching program, so you can sign up for the classes you’ll need.

As an apprentice, you’ll get paid from day one. In some programs, your pay increases as you build skills! You’ll also benefit from:

Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll work toward your degree by taking college classes outside of school hours.
Some apprenticeships may have you earn “micro-credentials” as you go. Essentially, these are mini certificates to confirm you’ve learned certain skills, like how to assess student work or use digital teaching tools. In some apprenticeships, your pay increases as you gain micro-credentials!
